Emosson: dam and lake |

This winter, while having fun at Le Tour, the ducks saw a big dam on the other side of the valley in Switzerland: Emosson. So we’ve decided to investigate, and discovered dinosaur footprints (although they really just look like they belong to some ancient duck!). When we arrived at the dam, we found our eyes have cheated us this winter, as the dam is so much bigger than it looks from across the valley: 180m and holds 225 million m3 of water (although not at this moment, they are doing maintenance work on the dam and partly drained the lake, which is quite interesting to see). We started walking across the dam, and along the beautiful lake. There are different routes you can take from here, but we were intrigued by the promise of dinosaur footprints, so we followed the signs to lake Vieux Emosson. After a rather steep climb for us untrained duckies, we were glad to take a long break at the cute refuge along the way. From here, the landscape changes completely and you have the feeling you’ve been teleported to the moon. You have to climb higher and pass some snowfields to come to the dinosaur footsteps, which is at 2400 m. And then came the anticlimax: the dinosaur footsteps: they are so small! We thought we’d see some giant T-Rex steps, but no! Our disappointment passed quickly though, as the walk in itself gave us the most amazing views. Just check out the pictures
Directions from Chamonix: head towards Vallorcine/Martigny and cross the boarder into Switzerland. Follow the signs to Chatelard, this is a nice windy road that takes you up to the dam. www.emosson-lac.ch |
